Four men arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in Wigston have been released under investigation.

The men – two aged 20, one aged 21 and one aged 19 – had been arrested yesterday evening (Wednesday).

Following questioning, all four men have this evening (Thursday) been released under investigation. Police enquiries remain ongoing.

Howard Staff, 66, was at his home in Gibson Close, Wigston at 3.45pm on Monday 13 January when someone unknown to him entered the house and assaulted him.

He suffered a number of chest injuries and died in hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning (14 January).

Officers have since been carrying out extensive CCTV trawls in and around the area, conducting house to house enquiries and speaking with local residents and businesses.

Detailed forensic searches have also been carried out in Gibson Close and neighbourhood officers continue to patrol the local area offering reassurance to residents.

Appeals have also been made asking for public help with enquiries and to provide information in relation to the ongoing investigation.

Detective Inspector Jonathan Blockley from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), said: "Our investigation remains very much ongoing and we have a team of dedicated officers and staff carrying out thorough and detailed enquiries.

"We continue to appeal to anyone who has any information which they think could help us to get in touch. It is not too late to make contact with us. My thanks do go to those who have helped us with enquiries so far providing information and supporting us in our ongoing investigation.

"This is a crime which has led to a man losing his life and we remain determined to establish the full circumstances of the incident and to find answers for Mr Staff's family.

"If you have any information at all, no matter how insignificant it may seem, I urge you to get in touch with us."

The family of Mr Staff has asked for privacy at this time and that they are left to grieve in peace.

If you can help the investigation, call 101 quoting incident number 411 of 13 January, or visit our public portal where information can be uploaded anonymously.
