Community Garden gets Co-op backing

Community Garden gets Co-op backing

Blaby District Council's award winning community garden is set to benefit from Co-op Members, after being selected as part of their community fund.

For the next twelve months, from 27 October until 24 October 2020, every time a Co-op Member buys a selected own-brand, products or service, 1% of the money they spend goes to local causes in their community.

After applying to be part of the scheme, A Place to Grow was selected as a good cause members will be able to choose to benefit from their contribution.

The money from the fund will support the garden, which helps residents become physically active, get involved in the community and meet new people in a friendly and safe environment.

A Place to Grow is both free and sustainable garden for those living with, or affected by a physical or mental health condition. Earlier this year the garden was given a Green Flag award for the ninth time, marking it as an outstanding open space.

The garden is a 'community health hub' of Leicestershire Recovery College, delivering a range of courses to people who have lived mental health experience, carers, friends, family and staff. An 'Empower' type 2 diabetes course also helps people to reduce their risk of long term health complications.

An outdoor lodge can be hired as a meeting room and the garden also plays host to corporate volunteer days.

Councillor Sharon Coe, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing & Regulatory Services, said: "This is really exciting news for us. The Co-op Community funding will bring huge opportunities to complete projects and ensure that even more people can benefit from A Place to Grow.

"We feel both proud and lucky to have this garden in our district. It brings huge positive benefits to both those who use it, and the businesses who regularly join us on their corporate volunteer day, helping us with the bigger tasks."
